About four out of 10 of the respondents say they'd like to
have sex more often. That's why the NCOA has launched a sexual health education
program for older adults called Love & Life, a Healthy Approach to Sex for Older
Adults.
The program aims to raise awareness and understanding of sexual intimacy for
people 60 and over. Educational workshops are scheduled for centers for mature
adults. across the nation.
The programs are designed to help dispel common misconceptions about growing
older, especially the myth that as the hair recedes, so does the sex drive. In
workshops, mature Americans may find new ways to overcome age-related challenges
to sexual intimacy.
Have A Good Life - Have Great Sex
Good sex is part of the good life according to 8 of 10 American adults polled
for a Washington symposium on Gender and Human Sexuality. The event was
co-sponsored by Columbia University's Partnership for Women's Health at
Columbia.
Ninety-four percent of respondents said sexual enjoyment adds to quality of life
at any age. At least half of the 500 U.S. adults queried said sexual problems
should not just be accepted as we age.
If they had sexual problems, 85 percent said they would talk to their doctor.
But many worried their physician would be uncomfortable talking about the
problem, would dismiss their concerns or there would be no medical treatment
available.
A majority of those surveyed believe sexual problems can cause difficulties
ranging from depression, poor self-image, extramarital affairs and divorce. When
there are sexual problems, most women say the woman is blamed more often than
the man. Only 37 percent of the men agreed.
