Visiting your loved one in a Nursing
Home
Tips for visiting your loved one in a nursing home.
Structure your visit before you come. Plan a walk; bring something to
share such as photos, art projects from grandchildren or an interesting
newspaper or magazine story to discuss.
You also can bring your relative's favorite food (check with staff for
any dietary restrictions) or join in with a scheduled nursing-home activity.
Make shorter, more frequent visits. Studies have shown this to be more
satisfying to most families.
Share family and neighborhood news. Most nursing-home residents maintain
an interest in the "outside world," and even if the news is sad such as a
death in the family they appreciate being kept informed.
Bring visitors: friends, neighbors, and especially grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. Also, visits by pets are usually enjoyable, but please
check with staff.
Show your relative you are interested in what he or she is saying by
asking questions and maintaining eye contact.
Encourage reminiscing. Talk about past hobbies and interests, or other
topics that will evoke pleasant memories.
