The goals of The Art of Retirement will be:
1. To prepare you for
that transition into retirement, a process that can begin several years
before retirement and continue 3-5 years or more into retirement, and

The Art of Retirement The concept of "retirement" began in the United States less than 50 years ago, and it has yet to hit its stride. Currently, millions of Americans consider themselves retired, and they have thousands of stories to tell about how they got there, how they like or do not like it, what they do with themselves in retirement, and more. But they are just the tip of the iceberg. |
|
 |
|
Behind them are tens of millions of Americans who will retire
over the next decade or more, at an annual rate of 3-5 million
per year, if demographic projections hold true. Many of you
reading this column right now are among those who have already
taken the plunge or are soon to do so.
To those soon to join the ranks of retirees, there are common
questions and concerns: How will I continue to fund my
retirement? How will I stay happy and healthy? Where is the best
spot for me to live? And what will I do all that new-found time?
And once the journey begins, there are sure to be bumps in the
road, as the transition into retirement can be stressful. In
fact, one psychologist ranked the retirement transition as the
tenth most stressful life event, right behind such favorites as
getting divorced, coping with the death of one's spouse, losing
one's job or getting married.
With this column, I want to introduce you to the concept of "The
Art of Retirement," the goals of which will be:
- 1. To prepare you
for that transition into retirement, a process that can begin
several years before retirement and continue 3-5 years or more
into retirement, and
- 2. To give you the skills and confidence to
define retirement for yourself and to encourage you to maintain
an effective, comfortable, exciting life in retirement.
We'll look at stories of those who have successfully or
unsuccessfully retired, specifics on how retirement may or may
not be possible, suggestions on when and why it should best
occur, and much more.
And my hope is that the column will be equally of interest to
those only beginning to think of the possibilities of retirement
through those who may be ten or more years into retirement.
So, what are my qualifications to speak about retirement? I've
been retired myself for more than five years. I've read and
mastered most of the best books on the subject over the past ten
years or so. And, for more than four years, I've taught "The Art
of Retirement" at several adult education sites in the area.
In interacting with hundreds of students in my classes, the
thesis that has developed is that "success" in retirement is
more of an art, than a science. I've also learned that no two
retirement stories are the same, and that evaluating how one is
doing in retirement is more subjective than objective.
Well, here's hoping that you'll plan on visiting the column
regularly and that you'll enjoy and appreciate what you read.
Along the way, your feedback will keep me on my toes and will
give me more ideas and stories to pass on to others. I'll look
forward to having you come along with me, and I'll look forward
to hearing from you about the columns and your feelings about
perfecting "The Art of Retirement. |
