NEW DRUG FIGHTS HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE An experimental drug from a
new pharmaceutical class could help as many as 50 percent of Americans with
high blood pressure to reach a normal blood pressure.
The new drug, omapatrilat, is the first of the vasopeptidase inhibitor
class of drugs. It is manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb of New York. In
data presented at an American Heart Association symposium, omapatrilat
reduced systolic blood pressure (the top number in blood pressure readings)
by 20 millimeters of mercury and diastolic (the bottom number) by 12 mm.
Dr. Michael Weber of the State University of New York Health Science
Center, Brooklyn, says such a significant reduction would be sufficient to
normalize the condition of most people with mild to moderate high blood
pressure. Clinical trials indicate omapatrilat is safe and well-tolerated,
he adds.
