Senior Citizens Online
Did You Know?
*For the first time in history, retirees outnumber teenagers.
*Two thirds of history's elderly are alive today.
*Over 2 million Americans turn 65 every year, and on average they will live another 17
years.
*Family members are more mobile and geographically spread out than ever before.
My parents are classified as Seniors, being just
barely over the age of 55. They have moved to a wonderful Del Webb community where like
minded individuals play golf, swim at the club, have block parties, all "Senior
Style". It's wonderful that they have been able to create this type of opportunity
for themselves, and, they seem happier than they have in years! My Mother said it's
refreshing to live around people who are of the same age with similar interests and
concerns.
Our society, up to this point, has not gone out of
its' way to creating a great deal of support to Senior citizens. Fortunately, I feel that
perception is changing and the Internet can play a significant role to providing a support
network. Many Seniors find themselves alone after a spouse has died. Or, for monetary
reasons, have been forced to move away from long time friends. A computer and being online
for a Senior can truly make a difference in their quality of life.
The Internet provides a rich array of support
networks designed specifically for senior citizens. Being Internet Savvy in the techno age
is extremely important for seniors and can play a tremendous role in maintaining optimal
emotional, mental and physical health. Where else can one obtain the latest information on
just about any subject? How about chatting with other seniors around the globe without a
long distance phone bill or travel expenses? Staying connected with family members via the
web is becoming more commonplace. And what about those who want to keep working and can do
so easily out of their homes via the web?
The Net has some great websites for Senior
Citizens. Here is one that I recommend.
Senior Site.com
http://www.seniorsite.com is a
fantastic site. It provides news to seniors, has a women's corner and men's corner, a joke
section, a senior health arena, an onsite advisor "Ask Jodee" for seniors
questions, a sex and seniors area, chat rooms, a lottery # picker and even a hobby corner.
The site describes itself below:
"SeniorSite.com is the first online community for seniors that doesn't treat you like
a useless dinosaur instead of what you really are - a viable member of society that feels
very much alive, and young at heart!"
Pass this site on to those seniors you know if
they haven't found it already! |
